Superiority

Strontium is a trace element found in seawater and soil. The main dietary source of strontium is seafood. Foods with lesser amounts of strontium include whole milk, wheat bran, meat, poultry, and root vegetables.
Strontium is chemically similar to calcium. It appears to play a role in the formation of new bone while slowing the breakdown of old bone, and thus may influence bone density. There is some evidence that women with osteoporosis may not absorb strontium as they should.
CAS#: 813-97-8
Molecular Weight: 640.86
Molecular Formula: (C6H5O7)2Sr3
Other Names: Strontium 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylate; Tristrontium dicitrate
 Strontium Increases Bone Mass Density
Strontium supplementation has been demonstrated to be a well-tolerated and effective means of preventing bone loss. In 2004, a double-blinded, placebo controlled study published in The New England Journal of Medicine aimed to evaluate the efficacy of strontium on helping to prevent structural damage and bone fragility. Over a three- year period, strontium supplementation reduced the risk of fracture by 41%. This reduction in risk was closely tied to the increase in bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and femoral neck (Fig 1). The occurrence of adverse side effects was low and reported equally among the treatment and placebo groups, further indicating the safe use of daily strontium supplements.
Absorption
The French pharmaceutical company Servier found that the bioavailability of strontium ranelate is about 25% (range 19-27%) after an oral dose of 2 g. The American company Osteologix claims to have superior absorption with its product strontium malonate.

Bone Quality
Strontium assists with the development of high quality bone tissue. Research found that strontium treatment increased bone mass, bone dimension, microarchitecture and intrinsic bone tissue quality.

Long-Term Effects
A 2009 study in Denmark found that there was significant retention of strontium after treatment was completed... especially if a person had taken strontium for eight years. It concluded its findings as follows: "According to the power function model the skeletal retention three and six months after stopping the treatment would average 66% and 58%, respectively after three years of treatment, and 76% and 70%, respectively after eight years of treatment. However, individual predictions are uncertain due to large inter-individual variations, and the values cannot be extrapolated to other bone sites."
